Anyone remember Virgin Records at the bottom of the Moor? ...And the one on High Street - they seemed to stock every record that had ever been released!
Or that one on the opposite side of the road to Redgates on the top corner can't remember its name - was it Bradleys Records? |

Yes, and, to be honest, I asked the very same question on Richard Hawley's site and it was all the memories that that brought back that made me realise I love Sheffield and my youth there.
I remember Virgin when the record racks were all black and made of wood. Angled outwards and as you say all the obscure stuff. It was where I spent most Saturdays. I recalled on Richard Hawley's forum how I bought Gong's Camembert Electrique album because it was only 50p. I still have that album on CD. Weird at the time but it grew on my massively. I still listen to Steve Hillage and he's done a great amount of stuff mixing with the Orb etc.
Virgin went through a makeover and, for me, lost that hippy appeal.
I also recall buying No Pussyfooting - Fripp and Eno from there and was totally distraught that it was nothing like Here Come The Warm Jets so took it back and swapped it for Rick Wakeman Six Wives.
In the later days I met a blond haired bloke behind the counter who was also our delivery man for mail order catalogue stuff. He realised I was well into Bowie and started to get me Bootlegs, when they were almost imposible to find. Would love to know if he's still around. |

Remember 'Violet May's" near where the Golden Dragon is down the Moor. Got loads of american imports & boolegs from her and some extremely rare stuff even then.

Violet May...I always remember her as being quite frightening and the alleys really tight to get around and it was smokey. But I did by Man Who Sold The World by David Bowie with Cartoon cover US import which was quite rare.
And then there was Bradleys records down that side alley and one opposite WH Smiths. I caught the bus to town to be the first to buy Diamond Dogs when it was released. I went with Craig Feetham. We both wanted to be first to buy it. He didn't have an LP player at the time and had to go downstairs to buy the tape. I won by a few seconds We got into school late.

Yep - scarey lady but nice with it, she was an absolute mind of information. I remember Wilson Peck music shop opposite the town hall. If you bought a vinyl from them and it was scratched or similar, you could not take it back.

Didn't there used to be 3 Bradleys Record Shops in Sheffield. One on Fargate near the bank, one on Chapel Walk and another one on Pinstone Street on the way down to the Moor? My first choice used to be Virgin on the High Street. I think another record shop opened up on fargate a few years after Bradleys had disappeared but not sure what it was called. |

I used to like the virgin shop at the bottom of the moor as you could listen first. It was the first place i knew did that. Do you remember Rumbelows on the moor they sold records also. But in my R&R and punk years there was only 1 shop to go where you could also get imports that was Revolution on the Gallery outside castle market. |

Would it have been the same firm of canns as one at the bottom of the Moor. An amusement arcade had used the same building until all the bottom end was shut down. They also sold musical instruments and sheet music and where i bought an acoustic guitar which is gathering dust now in the loft.................still can't play it properly but its got a nice tone. |
