Can you remember when we nearly all had a local cinema on the corner of a main road. I went to Abbeydale cinema and saw lots of Disney films there, Greystones had one across from where the somerfield supermarket is on Ecclesall rd ( I saw the original Batman film there ) i think that turned into napoleons but will stand corrected if wrong. changing the subject also on that supermarket site was a sports shop called Big Brown Bear and the supermarket was called Challenge.

Remember Studios 5,6 & 7 under the Grovesnor Hotel in town. There was a cinema above Pond Street at the rear of the Top Rank. One at the top of pond street and then there was one in Fitzallen Square but its name escapes me.

The one at the back of the Top Rank could be The Odeon, where I saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang which was shown in 2 halfs, so you could get refreshments off the girls at the front with there trays.. There was one next to or near wigfalls called The Classic. Studio 5-6-7 was on the Wicker as I remember. The Star advertisments used to have listings for there shady X films (not that I watched any). The one under the Grosvenor Hotel wasn't that called Cineplex.

Before it was called the Classic, the cinema in Fitzalan Square was called the News Theatre. It showed the news all day interspersed with cartoons, and you could stay in there all day. Talk about value for money. Other old cinemas I remember as I grew up on the Manor estate were the Rex, down Intake Rd and the Manor Cinema at the Manor Top. Down Darnall was the Lyric, and the Balfour, and a flea pit of a place that all us kids called the Little Dick. Fond memories of more innocent times.

Rex Cinema at Manor top - is that the one that became the Challenge Supermarket?.
Fond memories indeed. I remember my Grandmother taking me to see Bambi at the old cinema on Abbeydale Road which i believe is a night club now. Shame really the old cinemas had some real character.

I think the Rex was on the corner of Mansfield Rd and Hollybank Rd. That was pulled down and a supermarket built there early 80's I think. the supermarket could have originally been a challenge but can't remember. The one at manor top I dont know about but the building that was Somerfields (now Tesco Express) has that look of an old cinema. Int it strange that supermarkets have taken over a few old cinemas ther is an Asian grocer at the botton of Firth Pk Rd (corner of Page hall rd I think ) that definately looks like an old cinema.

Some years ago before new houses were built, there was a building on Eastern Ave and the Corner of Errington Rd (Arbourthorne) that looked like an old cinema. Does anyone know about this one.

In reply to Shiny Sheff regarding the Greystones cinema on Ecclesall rd YES it did turn into Napoleons casino but before that it was one of the first night clubs in Sheff called SHADES owned by MAX OMAIR later of MAXIMILLIONS on Charter row you had to go down some really steep stairs to get in ALAN KILBY the deaf and dumb wrestler was the doorman at some stage before he went on to work the Fiesta nightclub ,Josephine's and Locarno on London rd I also worked the door with ALAN at the Locarno for a while back on too the subject of old cinemas what about the old BUG HUT on South st PARK the STAR on Ecclesall rd junction with William st opp the old WARDS brewery as a young child friends and myself went round collecting rags and old news papers to take to BUTTON LN rag shop to gain monies to pay for the early morning rush to the STAR I remember one time a USA WORLD Champion YO YO player doing a exebition with the YO YO there "HI HO SILVER AWAY" the LONE RANGER RULES OKGrin
