Jack suggested starting a thread about which pub you had your first alcoholic drink in. Mine was in the Castle Inn down Dykes Hall Road, nr Hillsborough. I bought a pint of bitter. It was easy to get away with under age drinking because there were so many side rooms, tap room, pool room, dart room, family room etc. I was 16. |

People have mentioned the old NEWS THEATRE/ CLASSIC cinema in FITZ SQ but does anyone remember the BLUE BELL pub which turned into Wigfalls the Elephant which was derelict for many a year then turned into Halfords but best of all the UNITED/WED bar at the MARPLES every one socialised until the bell went 10 o clock closing in those days then all hell let loose the old COP BOX not the stone built one was always full anyone remember the GAY paree spelt wrong under MARPLES not forgetting MARPLES itself. |

I think my first drink would have been the same age as Mr Admin 16 an then go to my job saturday with a thick head. The bar would either have been the students union on glossop road where i would have had to wait ages outside for a student to sign me in. The other bar could well have been the dore moor inn where i used to play darts. The board was above a roaring open fire, lovely in the winter. Talking of darts which we wer'nt Pete do you remember playing darts in the union pub nether edge with the comedian dougie brown.

Used to sup in the Fleur de Lees Totley until 10.30pm closing time then shoot up to Dore Moor Inn for another one or two 11.00pm closing Derbyshire hours things you do when your a young lad also worked the doors for a very short while at FANNYS Owler bar in later years I mentioned Dave Beech in an early post I seem to remember another of his former partners KEV JOHNSON formally of Locarno owning Fannys . |

Heres one for you,my first drink was a pint of cider in the Golden Fleece at Thirsk,we had a Section Christmas Dinner during my National Service, and I was sick shortly after, and the one abiding memory was coming too and finding a pretty WAAF cleaning me up and making sure I was alright.
As a result she became a good mate, yes I said mate, as she was engaged to an Air Frame Sergeant, and we were Instruments. |
