Okay I'll start this one...who's your all-time favourite band or musician to come from Sheffield?
Mine are
Industrial music: Cabaret Voltaire
Solo: Richard Hawley
Indie: Pulp
Never heard of since: De Tian or They Must Be Russians
Female: I can't think of other than Bev Brookes from Betty Black (help me here) |

I remember seeing Def Leppard at the Dial House Working mens club in about 1978. They were supporting Charles Haughtry and the Deafaids.
We thought Def Leppard were rubbish and we thought they wouldn't amount to much. |

I liked 'Doctors of Madness' - They had a musician who played an electric violin - great band.
'You get booed before you play a note. we are one of the few bands that can get that strength of reaction off people..'
Cool |

Doctors of Madness, don't think they were from Sheffield (no London) but I remember them too. I saw them at City Hall, lead singer was Richard Strange and the violin was played by Urban Blitz

Absolutely. I had their first single, bought it of Steve who was in the class above at school...can't remember the name but it was on something like Bludgeon Rafola records and was an EP. I think I sold mine for about 30p to next door neighbour Terry Turnbull, and it's now worth a mint!

Scala Timpani - fantastic Sheffield group, saw them live at Top Rank in about 1982,3 or 4. I have still got their session on tape when they did John Peel' radio 1 late night show. |

Reverend and the Makers are a making a bit of an impact at the moment, they seem to be a slightly more mature Arctic Monkeys Style.
Still Def Leppard for me though.

Comsat Angels were up there for me, and for a good local live band - The warhols were pretty good too. I used to listen to Richard Tandy's 'New H Musak' on Radio Hallam when I was a teenager - a good source of local music. |

A few years ago I used to follow a local band called Carousel Moon, who then changed names to The Moon and who are now called Little man Tate. They had an exciting sound and I created and manged a fan website for a time. I remember Def Leppard just coming on the scene and bought there first EP on Bludgeon (red Label) when I worked at Dixons on the Moor, still have it. I think one of them went to my old Junior school Hunters Bar |

That single was worth a mint when they were really big. Not sure now. I sold mine to the next door neighbour for about 30p. |

I just checked my old record collectors price guide 2000 edition and a mint single with lyric sheet (150 printed )was said to be worth £300. Ebay sold one last week without lyric sheet(850 printed) £80 ish. Just shows you. I still have some Floyd bootleg records and one of them sold for £75 on Ebay. |

Loved Cabaret Voltaire - especially very early on - one my favourite gigs was when they played the Crucible Studio and The Extras supported them (was never really into The Extras at the time but they have actually been better than I remember...)
Stunt Kites... liked them - Firth Park School boys... |

I came across a piece of sad news in the Sheffield Star that Nick Sanderson of Clock DVA had died of lung cancer.

Yep Its a shame. I have lost 2 school mates who were friends over the years. they were the same age as me born '61. It makes you think doesn't it. As some old un's would say "by the grace of God". |
